How To Write An Objective Or Statement

There are two schools of thought when it comes to writing a statement of objectives. One is that you should never include a statement in your resume. The other is that you should always have one so that potential employers know what to expect from you as a job applicant.

The first school comes from the fact that not many people can write an effective statement of their objectives. A poorly written statement can derail your chances for an interview, so it might be best not to include one.

The other school believes that a well written statement of objectives, targetted at the job being applied for, can quickly attract the attention of the person reviewing your resume, and set you up for an exceptional interview.

Whether or not you choose to include a statement on your resume, it is essential to know how to write one that is a effective and eye catching.

A statement of objectives is basically a sentence or two that tells how your skills apply to the job at hand; what you want to achieve in your career and why. It has to be brief and get to the point quickly. You cannot ramble on.

You must know how to write a succinct statement that will get a potential employer’s attention and show them that you are the right person for the job. Knowing how to write a statement can make the difference in whether or not you are called for an interview.

What do you need to include in a statement? Like we said, it has to be brief and close to your heart when expressing your career goals. Here are a few examples:

For a teaching job:

I look for a position within a school system that will allow me to express my passion for teaching to my students and make them lifelong learners.

For a sales job:

I want to fully utilize my persuasive personality to bring new business into a company and make it as successful as I know it can be. I hope to grow with the company as I bring in new customers and contribute to its success.

For a secretarial job:

I want to bring my knowledge of office systems and procedures into a company and contribute to its success. I hope to advance as I become more proficient in the skills that are required of me.

The ones given above are meant only as guidelines, but notice that each has two parts. Basically one is your contribution to the company, and the second is how the company can contribute to you as you contribute to it.

The basis for latter -- how the company can contribute to what you want -- should be a direct result of your performance and contribution. Be careful that you don't sound demanding; rather show a synergism...that is, a "working together" with the company in which each succeeds in their objectives. By saying "I hope to", rather than "I want to", or "I wish to", you have softened your desires as a hope rather than a demand.

It's best to tailor the statement to the advertised job title by mentioning it specifically. For example, if the job title is "Professional Salesman", you might want to say, "As a Professional Salesman, I want to utilize my persuasive personality"...etc.

When learning how to write an objective statement, remember to first examine yourself as to exactly why you want this job. Then put it into words. Use words that will truly express all you feel, your skills and your career, and make your potential employer feel it too.

Show him or her why you want this job, and how it will greatly benefit her to hire you. After that, sit by the phone.

That interview call is on the way!
