Project a Professional Image By Using A Resume Service
Hiring a resume service to put together your
resume can be a really good idea – especially if you are not really sure how to prepare one
that can accurately convey your experience and abilities in a way that will make your prospective employer "sit up and take notice".

You need to project a professional image to get the job that you really want, but you don't feel you can do it. If that's the case, it's time to hire a service.
How do you go about hiring one?
First, look in the Yellow Pages and see if there are any businesses that offer a
service in your area and utilize the Internet. You also might check with your local community college to see if they provide services. Community colleges sometimes provide free services that are meant to help you craft your own
resume with a minimum of involvement and just a little bit of advice.
Contact the listings you've discovered and discuss your needs by phone with a representative. You may want to e-mail her a general description of yourself, and ask for a statement in writing of the services they provide.
Once you've eliminated all but two or three of those that are experts in your specific line of employment, ask for contracts or proposals and quotes. Be sure to examine these proposals to make sure they are going to provide you with sufficient one-on-one counseling time. Most resume services charge a flat fee for a resume or cover letter.
Ask for references, and check them out thoroughly on the Internet with informal business sites and the Better Business Bureau. Look for complaints, but if you find them, make sure they sound valid. Bring them to the company's attention. If the prospective resume service can provide an adequate explanation for the complaint and it was dealt with to the satisfaction of the client, you can go on to consider the service.
They may ask you to e-mail all of your specific information, or they may wish to sit down with you for a one-on-one consultation. The latter is the best.
Thoroughly review the resume they produce, and don't be afraid to challenge it, if you feel uncomfortable with anything in it. Remember, it is YOU your resume expresses, not a concept concocted by a professional that may sound good, but doesn't express your skills accurately.
Finally, they should put it together in an appealing, professional format that is sure to impress you as well as any prospective employers.
This is something an assisted, or free, community college service can't do, and is something to keep in mind. The old adage "you get what you pay for" is true of resume services along with everything else.
Keep in mind that if you want to hire a
service to create your resume, you will have to pay a fee for it. If you think that the rates the
service is charging are a little more than you want to pay, just move on to another one.
This writer once had her own
service. I learned by trial and error how much to charge people. I also learned about the headaches of non-paying customers, but that is a different story! At any rate, while times have changed considerably since I had my business, it is not uncommon to find a service that will ask for anywhere from $25 to $50 for a resume
and then another $20 or so for a cover letter.
Now, you might be feeling a little sticker shock here, but realize that when you hire a
service, you are getting a professional. That means that the person who is doing your resume
has had experience putting together winning resumes and you will have a quality product for your money.
If you are serious about getting the job of your dreams and have little or no experience crafting a resume, you may want to look into hiring a
service to help you along the way. All you need to do is provide them pertinent information and then wait for the finished product to arrive in your e-mailbox.
After that, you take the beautiful
resume that your
service has provided and send it out to prospective employers and then wait for that phone call!
